Of course we keep our members informed about these workshops via e-mail, but it's also possible to join these if you're not a member. These can feature all kinds of subjects such as technical refinement or Lindy Hop on slow music or even other styles like Balboa or Blues. Occasionally we also offer workshops from either internal or external teachers. Therefore they will also be announced in member exclusive group apps and in the weekly classes. They are mostly hosted in blocks of 3 lessons and only open for registration for members of Swing Out Loud. These lessons can be extra classes for dancers of level 2 and higher or about other subjects like Solo Jazz, Authentic Jazz or Blues. Occasionally, Swing Out Loud hosts theme lessons. Because we tend to attract a lot of international students the lessons are taught in English so everybody can join. We've got classes for all levels ranging from beginners to advanced dancers. Our focus is on Lindy Hop but we also incorporate Charleston and sometimes offer other styles like Authentic Jazz, as well as the occasional workshop in other kinds of Swing Jazz dances. Feel free to learn the role that you want to learn!Īt the moment level 2 and 3 are combined due to a lack of teachers.Īll lessons are given on Wednesday evening in Lumen, Velveweg 54, Enschede. This will improve your dancing and you will learn to dance socially with different people.Īlso, we (and the Lindy scene more generally) do not think that a specific dancing role (lead/follow) should be strictly assigned to specific genders. Because of the social nature of the dance we rotate partners a lot during lessons. It's important to know that although Lindy Hop is a partner dance, you don't have to bring your own partner. We will focus on the finer aspects of dancing to further strengthen your fundamentals. The lessons typically focus on what you can do with all the Lindy Hop knowledge you already have, like changing rhythms to fit the music or doing double turns instead of single turns. Dancers at this level should have no problem dancing to very slow and very fast music and we go through new material faster than at the other levels. Level 3 The highest level is meant to challenge even the best dancers at Swing Out Loud. This level is focussed on making you a good social dancer, so you can dance with anyone at a party. You will expand your vocabulary of moves, learn to play with musicality and partner interaction. We will build on your Lindy Hop foundation techniques and improve them. If you know the basics by heart and are thirsty for more than you belong here. Level 2 This level is for the majority of the dancers. If you want a taste of Lindy Hop, join the free Open Lessons or Drop-ins to learn the basics In this time you will learn the fundamentals of Lindy Hop and Charleston. If you don’t have Lindy Hop experience or if you’ve had a couple of drop in classes this is the perfect place for you. People usually stay in level one for about half a year. Level 1 This is the level that starts from the beginning. Lindy Hop is danced in couples (a pair consisting of a lead and a follow), of which the roles are non-gendered, so everyone can lead and/or follow if they so desire! It is a social dance, meaning that we do not have a fixed ‘dance partner’ like one often finds in other dances. We've divided our Lindy Hop lessons up into three different levels. A dance troupe called Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers performed swing dance around the world and featured dancers such as Frankie Manning, Norma Miller, Willa Mae Ricker, Al Minns, Leon James- just to name a few! 1 The Savoy Ballroom was famous for its ‘Battle of the Bands’ where two Jazz bands would face off against each other in the ultimate Jazz music showdown. Chick Webb, Ella Fitzgerald, just to name a few, all played at the Savoy Ballroom. Once you get the Lindy bug, there’s no going back! The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem was a haven for Black Americans to dance Lindy Hop and connect with the brilliant original Jazz musicians. It is a fusion of various jazz dances which came before it, most notably tap, breakaway and Charleston. The Lindy Hop, mother of all modern swing dances, is an energetic and dynamic jazz dance which evolved in 1920s and 30s Harlem, New York.
